NLR-ATSI is able to provide accident investigation boards with engineering support in accident and
incident investigations ranging from on-scene wreckage investigations to flight path reconstruction and accident sequence analysis.
For example, the safety institute has recently supported the Dutch Transportation Safety Board and the Royal Netherlands Air Force
with on-site investigation, flight path reconstruction, impact assessment and accident analyses of a number of aircraft and helicopter
accidents. Our contribution to the investigations can be found in the accident reports which are available in the Publications section
on this website.
Example
On 25 September 1996 a DC-3 of the Dutch Dakota Association
crashed in the Waddenzee near Den Oever. Since no Flight Data
Recorder was installed onboard the aircraft, the only means
to reconstruct the flight path was radar data. NLR-ATSI supported
the investigation of the crash by reconstructing the flight
path from radar data. Based on the aircraft’s flight
path and aircraft performance calculations NLR-ATSI provided
the investigation committee with an explanation of the observed
trajectory with a most probable cause of the crash.
